Job Purpose

As a General Worker, your primary responsibility is to assist in various agricultural operations, particularly in the seedling production and transplanting process. This hands-on role involves physical labor and is ideal for candidates who are comfortable working outdoors, following instructions, and contributing to the success of daily farming operations.

You will play a key role in supporting the planting, preparation, and pollination processes essential for high-quality crop production.


Key Responsibilities

As part of your day-to-day duties, you will:

  • Count and package seeds accurately according to production requirements
  • Soak, wash, and dry seedling trays to prepare them for reuse
  • Prepare the seedling mix and fill trays for planting
  • Sow seeds based on a sowing list provided by the farm team
  • Move seedling trays from the germination room to the seedling house after 72 hours
  • Organize and arrange trays in the correct sequence for optimal growth
  • Fill planting pots with pre-mixed seedling medium
  • Move and place pots in greenhouses, ready for the next growth stage
  • Connect irrigation drippers to each pot to ensure proper watering
  • Transplant seedlings from seedling houses into greenhouses or open fields
  • Create planting holes in field beds and assist with manual transplanting
  • Assist with trellising by preparing and connecting support ropes
  • Perform flower identification and emasculation tasks under breeder instructions
  • Pollinate plants as per the provided crossing book (specific to breeding programs)

This role includes both manual labor and attention to detail, especially during delicate processes such as emasculation and pollination.


Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • National Senior Certificate (Grade 12)Essential
  • Experience in agriculture, horticulture, or nursery work is advantageous
  • Ability to work in greenhouses, open fields, and varying weather conditions

  • Able to follow written and verbal instructions accurately
  • Reliable, punctual, and a good team player
