Programme Overview

The Young Professional in Training Learnership is a structured two-year programme designed to give recent graduates and young talent the opportunity to gain valuable workplace experience, professional development, and mentorship. Participants will work alongside experienced professionals in their respective fields while being exposed to real business challenges and projects.

The programme is aimed at producing highly skilled, competent, and confident young professionals who are ready to take up critical roles within Transnet and the wider transport and logistics industry.


Programme Objectives

  • To provide structured on-the-job training and practical work experience.
  • To develop technical, managerial, and leadership capabilities in young professionals.
  • To prepare participants for future permanent opportunities within Transnet or the broader logistics sector.
  • To support South Africa’s national goals of youth employment, skills development, and economic transformation.

Fields of Specialisation

Transnet seeks young professionals from a wide range of academic and technical backgrounds. Depending on qualifications, candidates may be placed in one of the following business areas:

  • Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Industrial, and Rail Engineering)
  • Information Technology & Digital Solutions (Software Development, Cybersecurity, Data Analytics)
  • Finance & Accounting
  • Supply Chain Management & Logistics
  • Human Resources & Industrial Psychology

Each field provides unique exposure and responsibilities, enabling trainees to develop both functional expertise and cross-disciplinary knowledge.


Programme Structure

The YPT Learnership is structured to include:

  1. Workplace Training
    • On-the-job learning in a professional environment.
    • Active participation in projects, operations, and business problem-solving.
  2. Formal Development
    • Workshops, short courses, and seminars on soft skills, leadership, and technical topics.
    • Opportunities to pursue professional certifications where applicable.
  3. Mentorship and Coaching
    • Guidance from experienced Transnet professionals.
    • Regular feedback and performance reviews to track progress.
  4. Rotational Exposure
    • Placement in different departments to gain holistic business understanding.
    • Practical insight into how Transnet integrates rail, ports, and pipelines.

Duration

  • 24 months (2 years)
  • Full-time commitment required.
  • Successful completion may lead to permanent employment opportunities, depending on business needs and performance.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • South African citizen between the ages of 18–35 years.
  • Completed National Diploma, BTech, or Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field of study.
  • Less than two years of full-time work experience (excluding internships).
  • Strong academic performance and willingness to learn.
  • Good communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
  • A commitment to ethical conduct, professionalism, and safety.

Advantageous:

  • Postgraduate qualifications.
  • Proven involvement in leadership, community projects, or student organisations.
  • Strong computer literacy and adaptability to digital systems.
