Transnet Freight Rail invites suitably qualified and unemployed South African youth to apply for the Trainee Train Assistant Internship Programme 2025.

About the Position
As a Trainee Train Assistant, you will support the Train Driver in safely and efficiently operating various types of locomotives and trains — including freight, passenger, heavy-haul, and high-speed services — ensuring cargo is delivered on time and in good condition.
Position Responsibilities
- Assist with locomotive preparation, brake tests, and pre-trip inspections.
- Participate in shunting and sidings operations.
- Monitor train safety during journeys and report incidents.
- Provide administrative support, including maintaining a train journal.
- Comply with safety regulations and Transnet procedures.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric) with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science
- Minimum height of 1.6m
- Must be 21 years or older by September 2025
- Good physical and mental health (medical testing required)
- Psychomotor ability (Vienna Testing System assessment)
- Willingness to undergo extensive theoretical and practical training
- Reside in or near Ermelo
